Composite Fillings

What are composite fillings?

Imagine your child has a little boo-boo on their tooth – a cavity. A composite filling is like a tooth-colored patch that a dentist uses to fix that boo-boo and make the tooth strong and healthy again.

What are composite fillings made of?

  • A Special Mixture: Composite fillings are made from a mixture of fine glass or quartz particles held together by a plastic resin. Think of it like a very strong and durable putty.
  • Tooth-Colored: The best part for kids (and parents!) is that the dentist can match the color of the filling very closely to your child's natural tooth. This means the filling won't be very noticeable.

Why are Composite Fillings Used for Children?

  • Treating Cavities: The main reason is to fill cavities (tooth decay) caused by bacteria. By removing the decay and filling the space, it stops the cavity from getting bigger and causing more problems like pain or infection.
  • Repairing Minor Damage: Composite can also be used to fix small chips or cracks in teeth.

Home Care Tips

To prevent cavities in children, ensure they brush twice daily for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, floss once a day, and limit sugary drinks and snacks. Encourage a balanced diet, rinse with water after meals, and make oral hygiene a fun routine. Regular dental checkups, including professional cleanings and potential fluoride treatments or sealants, are also crucial for maintaining healthy smiles. Consistent home care and professional dental visits work together to minimize the risk of tooth decay.
