Think of a crown (cap) as a protective helmet or a new outer shell for a damaged tooth. It's a tooth-shaped covering that fits snugly over the entire visible portion of a tooth. 

•  Stainless steel crowns (SSCs): These are the most common type for back teeth. They are strong, durable, and cost-effective. They have a silver appearance.
• Zirconia crowns: These are tooth-colored and offer a more aesthetic option, especially for front teeth. They are also very strong.

• Severely decayed teeth: When a cavity is too large for a regular filling to fix and the tooth is weakened.
• Fractured or chipped teeth: To restore the tooth's shape and function.
• Developmental defects: To cover teeth that haven't formed properly.
• After pulp therapy: To protect and strengthen a tooth that has undergone pulp therapy (like a root canal for a baby tooth).

 Preventing the need for crowns in children revolves around excellent home care that focuses on preventing the issues that lead to significant tooth damage in the first place, such as severe decay or fractures.
